I’d say it combines the iron from there blood and combined it with elastic cartilage I don’t know what else, but he uses it to create weapons or harden them. so he can make a bunch of different weapons, mechanic’s, etc

so it’s flexible, hardens, and when it breaks you can repurposed it.
